The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said to ‘A’ishah, "Had your people not been so close to pre-Islamic time (1), I would have demolished the Ka’bah (2), and rebuilt it with two doors (3)." Footnotes: (1) (Jahiliyyah) literally means ignorance and refers to the pre-Islamic pagan practices, i.e. loss of moral values and manners, injustice and commitment of atrocities against humans, animals and the environment. A more general meaning for (Jahiliyyah) that applies to modern times is: A state that befalls humanity when it steers away from God’s path. (2) The most venerable structure in Islām, situated within the Sanctified Mosque of Makkah. During prayer, Muslims face in its direction, wherever they are in the world. (3) As the religion was not yet firmly established in their hearts, the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him feared that they would abandon the Ka’bah were he to dismantle it to create a door for entry and another for exit.
